Culture Shock

|
Culture shock is a term used to describe the anxiety and feelings (of surprise, disorientation, confusion, etc.) felt when people have to operate within an entirely different cultural or social environment, such as a different country or a different state than where they live. The term was introduced for the first time in 1954 by Kalvero Oberg.

I have experienced culture shock in varying degrees and also observed it in others. I appreciate the fact that Oberg includes culture shock between different states as everyone has experienced this to some degree, even if they have not been abroad for a considerable period - the Swiss, with their cantons, some french, some germanic some italian-speaking, are a good example of inter-state cultural differences.
